Buffalo Named Hottest Housing Market By Zillow

Jan 22, 2024 Posted by Greg Pokriki

Zillow released a study that named Buffalo the hottest housing market in the U.S.

The platform - which has become a verb for those in the search process - highlighted Buffalo's affordability and job opportunities when making the announcement. Even when compared to the other metros in the top 10 of the rankings, Buffalo boasted a significantly lower typical home cost.

"Among the front-runners, Buffalo has the highest number of new jobs per new home permitted — a measure of expected demand. New jobs often mean new residents," Zillow said in its press release announcing the distinction. The City of Buffalo and Erie County's population grew in the 2020 Census for the first time since the 1950s and 1970s, respectively.

"Affordability and job growth push the Great Lakes ... to the forefront of the forecast"

"Housing markets are healthiest where affordable home prices and strong employment are giving young hopefuls a real shot at buying and starting to build equity," said Anushna Prakash, data scientist for Zillow Economic Research.

The methodology included an analysis of the top 50 metros in the country, new job creation, current and projected costs, and expected appreciation.
